Ricardo Jose Giordano

Ricardo Jose Giordano graduated from the Pharmacy School at University of São Paulo (USP) and obtained his doctorate degree from the Department of Biochemistry at USP studying the interaction of the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi with host cells and extracellular matrix.

These studies were supervised by Dr. Maria Julia Alves and included a one year internship at the University of California Irvine in the laboratory of Dr. Jerry Manning.

He then changed fields and relocated to the United States to work with Dr. Renata Pasqualini and Wadih Arap at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. There, he dedicated his time to study blood vessel formation by angiogenesis and vascular heterogeneity, using the phage display technology. From these studies, a peptidomimetic was developed and is currently in pre-clinical development for use in retinopathies.

After almost 10 year in the United States, he returned to Brazil to become a professor and independent investigator in the Department of Biochemistry of the Chemistry Institute at USP, working in the fields of vascular biology and Chagas disease.
